Sport and LGBT communities have always had a troublesome relationship. From discrimination within opposition teams, to hateful slurs that are chanted during matches. The Cardiff Lions are a local team, although they are primarily made up of gay players they also welcome and accept all sexual orientations. Talking to the team members about their experiences of playing a game that is seen as a masculine sport led to some interesting and important conversation.

The players were often judged and ridiculed for playing Rugby because they were seen by many supporters and other leading sports as effeminate.Let’s not forget Gareth Thomas and Keegan Hirst, national rugby players who openly came out to their organisations and the world about being gay. Without the bravery of such people and teams like the Lions it is hard to break down the barriers and the stereotypes that have been enforced upon the LGBT sporting community.
